Daruma
The origin of the current-day Daruma comes from the Buddhist monk, Bodhidharma, who lived in the 5th/6th CE. The Daruma figure is painted in various ways, although is typically painted red.
One of the eyes (left) is painted by a person desiring a result in their lives. After the desire is accomplished or fulfilled, the other eye is filled in.
The Pixel Bodhidharma was created for the Japanese Arts Network (JA-NE) located in Denver, CO., particularly for the Ishin-Desnshin art show held at The Collective. The show ran from May 31 - Aug 1, 2022.
Manekineko
Maneki Neko (招き猫 meaning “beckoning cat”) is the name for Japanese Fortune Cats. The two manekineko were created for the annual fundraiser for the Annual Japan America Society of Colorado (JASC) GALA.
Manekineko are regarded as a symbol of good luck, prosperity, and success.
Courage Manekineko
The koban (coinage) has the words, "Shishi no kokoro," or "lionheart”, which conveys the desire to beckon courage and bravery.
Pixel Manekineko
The meticulously hand-painted pixels conveys the beckoning of happiness and fortune, both in the digital and non-digital worlds.
